Homeschool

Spencer is enrolled in a homeschool program.  So far, we are loving it.

They did a 'walk through the ancient world' program.  The kids were put on one of three teams, made their own costumes, wrote their own plays, and memorized facts about who they were representing.

(Spencer was Romulus and Nero on the Roman team.)

Swords were encouraged.  I almost died of shock.

They put the three groups around the room and let them battle it out for points with extra treats for good sportsmanship.  Each team was given a battle cry.  Rome's was strong and involved yelling.

Spencer portrayed Romulus first, complete with a coordinated sword fight with his 'stand in' brother.

Then he played Nero who fiddled while Rome burned.
(We didn't have a fiddle but an ukulele worked just as well.)

These are shots of all three groups - Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

This is the Rome group.

The program was so inventive, so interactive, so well done.  I loved it.  Spencer is a bright kid and I worried about pulling from his GATE program at regular school.  But honestly...he gets exposed to some cool programs and has way more time in the day to play and explore like a normal kid.  (It helps that is a bit of an autodidact...)  And the kids in his program (yes, these kids are all the same age and yes, Spencer is tiny) are great.  They are bright, creative, and friendly.

I am so glad that we found this program.  It is the right place for him for now.
